If you're dealing with histamine intolerance or mast cell activation, finding delicious and safe recipes can be challenging.

Most smoothies have pineapple, banana, strawberries, citrus or other high histamine ingredients. For those of us struggling with histamine or mast cell issues, this kind of smoothie could potentially make our symptoms worse!

Our Super Berry Blast Smoothie is not only safe for those with histamine issues but is also packed with abundant vitamin C, well known and celebrated for its antihistamine and mast cell stabilizing properties.

Our Smoothie Recipe features sea buckthorn berries, a wild superfood. These bright orange berries are a great addition to this smoothie, for the incredible vitamin C content they bring and a refreshing tangy flavour. And good news - they're low histamine!

Besides its tart, fruity flavour, sea buckthorn is bursting with healthful benefits such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and antiviral properties, as well as being cardio and neuro protective. It contains a treasure trove of vitamins, minerals, and polyphenols. (1).

We hope you enjoy our smoothie recipe using this versatile and nutritious berry. The combination of blueberries and sea buckthorn keeps this smoothie low in sugar, and the healthy fats from the coconut milk further ensure blood sugars will remain stable.

Prepare this smoothie for breakfast while you cook up your favourite meat to round out your meal. Tips on where to find these berries below.

Low Histamine Super Berry Blast Smoothie

Serves 2

Ingredients:

2 cups frozen blueberries

1/2 cup frozen sea buckthorn berries

1 can (400 ml) full-fat coconut milk

Pinch of Himalayan or sea salt

Instructions:

1. In a blender, combine all the ingredients.

2. Blend until you achieve a smooth and creamy consistency.

3. Pour the smoothie into a glass and garnish with a few fresh or frozen berries if desired.

Enjoy your delicious and histamine-friendly berry smoothie!

Tips:

Shopping:

Your local health food store may carry sea buckthorn in the freezer section. When in late summer, you may be lucky enough to spot some fresh sea buckthorn berries at your farmer's market.

You can also try using dried sea buckthorn powder if you know you tolerate dried powdered versions of fruit. Dried forms tend to be higher in histamine.

Smoothie thickness:

Adjust the thickness to your preference by adding water to thin, or ice cubes for a colder, thicker version.

Sweetness:

Customize the sweetness by adding a natural sweetener like honey or maple syrup if your tolerance allows and if you don’t have blood sugar issues.

This Super Berry Blast Smoothie provides a tasty alternative for individuals managing histamine or mast cell mediated symptoms.
